Graduate Students / Post-Doctoral Fellows Workshop (click to see the enlarged version fo the pictures)
Sunday, October 26, 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM, Junior Ballroom C.

This workshop was targeted to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of innovative research in aquaculture, the elements required for preparing a successful proposal, working as part of a team and resolving conflicts. The workshop participants discussed components and strategies of multi-disciplinary innovative aquaculture research, consideration of stakeholder interests in the research design and strategies to resolve conflicts.

Network Investigators / Post-Doctoral Fellows Workshop (click to see the enlarged version fo the pictures)
Sunday, October 26, 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM, Junior Ballroom D, 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM Junior Ballrooms C&D (combined with students).

A series of 60-90 minutes workshops was designed to provide AquaNet researchers with opportunities to gain further knowledge of and discuss topics of high priority to AquaNet. While the two workshops in the morning, providing policy advice and managing intellectual property, were geared to network investigators and Post-Doctoral Fellows, the afternoon workshops on interacting with media and building research partnerships were targeted to students as well.

Sunday, October 26, 6:30 - 10:30 PM, Vancouver Aquarium.

AquaNet Chair of the Board David Rideout and Executive Scientific Director Dr. Scott McKinley, welcomed delegates and special invited guests to the official conference opening at the Vancouver Aquarium, a unique institution that is also actively engaged in aquaculture related research. The Chair thanked retiring Board members for their significant contribution to AquaNet. Welcoming worlds by The University of British Columbia’s Vice President Research, Dr. Indira Samarasekerah, highlighted the university’s commitment to support aquaculture research, and the significant role AquaNet plays in the advancing high quality research and educating young scientists at UBC. Honourable Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries, John van Dongen, welcomed delegates to the British Columbia and emphasised the importance of aquaculture for the economic and social well being of British Columbia and the Province’s commitment in funding and human resources to support aquaculture research.

Poster Presentations (click to see the enlarged version fo the pictures)

Posters presented the achievements resulting from AquaNet’s three years of research investment. They provide an opportunity for a detailed discussion on specific projects and help students improve their communications skills. Posters are judged and the best receive awards based on specific criteria.

Oral Presentations (click to see the enlarged version fo the pictures)

The oral presentations included nearly all research projects funded in the previous and this fiscal year and centred on five strategic research areas, namely health management, policy development, integrated and sustainable approaches: best practices and mitigation, new species diversification: pre-planning to operations, wild and farmed interactions, improving commercial efficiency and sustainability.
