Special Applied Training Workshops

Target Audience: AquaNet graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and research/technical assistants.

Purpose: To develop skills in specific methodologies, technologies or lab practices, obtain sector-specific applied knowledge, in areas including the social and ethical aspects of research, business environment, research & development management, intellectual property management and career planning, by building on AquaNet's unique linkages between academic research and industrial/sector partners.

Travel Support Program - AquaNet Knowledge Exchange Workshops

Eligibility: AquaNet graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and research/technical assistants.

Purpose: To enable participation at AquaNet Knowledge Exchange Workshops and promote specialised and interdisciplinary training of highly qualified personnel within AquaNet.

For successful applicants, AquaNet will cover the following expenses:

AquaNet Sponsored Workshops:

  1. Total associated costs of attending if the applicant is actively participating or providing support services (presenting, assistance in workshop delivery and preparing proceedings), and the workshop is relevant to applicant’s research field;
  2. Partial costs up to a maximum contribution of $750, provided the workshop is relevant to the student's research field, (i.e. applicants will be required to secure additional funding source e.g. project funding)

Non AquaNet Sponsored Workshops:

  1. In special cases, AquaNet will provide supplemental support to a maximum of $750 to attend workshops not sponsored by AquaNet, if it can be demonstrated that the workshop is directly relevant to the applicant's research project, and that the attendance will enhance the research of the trainee. Applicants will be required to secure additional funding sources e.g. project funding.

Application Procedures:

  • Complete the Knowledge Exchange Workshop on-line application form at least two (2) weeks prior to the date of the actual event.
  • Submit a letter of support. Letters of support must be completed by the applicant's supervisor. Downloadable versions of the documents are available below:

    Travel Support Program - Conferences

    Eligibility: AquaNet graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.

    Purpose: To enable participation in conferences and promote specialised and interdisciplinary training of highly qualified personnel within AquaNet.

    The approval of this program will be carried out on a case-by-case basis and travel awards to attend conferences will be awarded in accordance to the application criteria and available AquaNet funds.

    Conference Travel Awards cannot be used to attend AquaNet’s Annual Conference

    Travel awards to attend conferences will be awarded in value up to a maximum of $1000 within Canada and $2000 for international conferences.

    The Conference Travel Award can only cover expenses as follows:

    • Travel for conference attendance (AquaNet will only cover the cost of direct airfare to and from the location of the conference; if you chose to make a detour as part of the trip you must provide a quote for direct airfare with your travel claim)
    • Accommodations, any required ground travel (e.g., taxi fares) and per diems (AquaNet cannot cover meals provided by the conference as per AquaNet travel policy allowances) for the conference period only plus one day of travel before and after the conference dates.
    • Conference registration

    (Please see the travel policy under Internal Communications of the AquaNet Website for full details on allowable expenses as there are restrictions (i.e. use of private vehicle and car rentals))

    Application Procedures:

    • To be considered, applicants must be:
      • an AquaNet graduate student or post-doctoral fellow.
      • making a presentation in person (poster or oral) of his/her AquaNet research, with copy of the abstract submitted to AquaNet (fax to AquaNet's Education Officer at 709-737-3500)
      • the first author of the abstract/presentation
    • Complete the on-line application form at least four (4) weeks prior to the date of the actual event.
    • Demonstrate relevance / importance of the conference to his/her actual research within the application form
    • Include a detailed budget of expected expenses and all sources of funding within the application form
    • Provide a Letter of Support from supervisor and fax to the Education Officer at 709-737-3500

      Internships/Work Placement Program

      Eligibility: AquaNet graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and research/technical assistants.  

      Purpose: To provide supplemental opportunities for laboratory and applied industrial training leading to the development of research solutions, enhancement of employment opportunities, and a mechanism for knowledge transfer and industrial collaboration.

      This program involves placement of AquaNet trainees in research and industrial settings, working with network researchers, industrial partners and staff.

      Applicants must demonstrate that the opportunity to gain practical industrial experience during the placement would be otherwise unavailable to them. Applicants must also demonstrate that the proposed placement will further the development of their current AquaNet research project and/or future employment opportunities.

      AquaNet will provide partial funding. Applicants will be required to secure additional funding sources e.g. project funding.

      Application Procedures

      • Complete the on-line internship / work placement application form at least two (2) weeks prior to the date of the actual event.

        Research Exchanges

        Eligibility: AquaNet graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and research/technical assistants.  

        Purpose: To acquire new research techniques and technology training through exchanges with Network research institutions and international lab facilities, building on opportunities enabled through collaborative research and Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs).

        Applicants must demonstrate that the opportunity to learn specific research techniques and / or the use of specific research equipment during the placement is / are

        1. not required for the completion of the current project; and
        2. would be otherwise unavailable to the applicants

        Furthermore, the applicants must demonstrate that the proposed placement will further the development / understanding of their current AquaNet research project, and / or the development of their future employment opportunities.

        AquaNet will provide partial funding. Applicants will be required to secure additional funding sources e.g. project funding.
