EDUCATION & TRAINING - Overview

One of AquaNet's five strategic activity areas is increasing the number of highly qualified personnel through education and training is and focused on:  

  • Recruitment
  • Training and retention
Education and Training Goal: "to attract and develop the new leaders to grow a sustainable Canadian aquaculture sector through multidisciplinary, innovative education and training of skilled and valuable researchers."

AquaNet complements academic training with practical, sector-relevant learning opportunities, and supports knowledge exchange between AquaNet and the aquaculture sector. Multidisciplinary means encouraging interaction of students from a wide range of disciplines in social and natural sciences (e.g., biology, ecology, genetics, fish physiology, economics, sociology, zoology). 

Target audiences : graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and research assistants involved in AquaNet research projects

In addition, AquaNet offers training to Network Investigators (faculty) and partner scientists.

The education and training program includes the following elements:

  1. AquaNet's Annual Conference, research meetings and special workshops to increase exposure to researchers from multiple disciplines and to provide opportunities to receive feedback on research projects.

  2. Applied training workshops

  3. a travel support program to attend:

  4. research exchanges to acquire new research techniques and technology facility training

  5. researcher directories, to highlight special skills and expertise and to facilitate networking with other researchers within AquaNet
