Biography of the Executive Scientific Director![]() Robert Scott McKinley, Ph.D. Executive Scientific Director, AquaNet Professor, University of British Columbia Director, Centre for Aquaculture and the Environment Dr. Scott McKinley was appointed Executive Scientific Director of AquaNet, Canada's research network in aquaculture, in 2003. A Professor and Director of the Centre for Aquaculture and the Environment in the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Dr. McKinley is also a senior Canada Research Chair in Aquaculture and the Environment. He has been AquaNet's Theme Leader for Environmental Integrity since the inception of the Network in 1999. An environmental physiologist who has frequently demonstrated the use of wireless communication technology that permit scientists to monitor environmental change from the perspective of the animal, Dr. McKinley studies have taken him across Canada and to various parts of the globe including the Amazon, Mediterranean, and Scandinavia. His work focuses on the sustainable management of our wild fish stocks as well as sustainable aquaculture. As AquaNet's Executive Scientific Director, Dr. McKinley has been instrumental in strategically focusing AquaNet in key priority research areas and engaging the Network in a broad consultative process with the various aquaculture stakeholders. Scott has also helped facilitate international collaborations, and the development of a vision for innovative and integrated aquaculture that is in harmony with other resource users and has widespread support of the Canadian public. He has also played a role in establishing the first West coast research laboratory dedicated to excellence in aquaculture research - West Vancouver Laboratory. Dr. McKinley holds numerous international appointments and has been widely consulted by many national and international organisations. He received his B.Sc. in fisheries and wildlife from the University of Guelph, M.Sc. from York University and a Ph.D. in Environmental Physiology from the University of Waterloo.
