Here is the latest update from the AquaNet Administrative Centre.

Theme Leaders

Some investigators have asked for clarification on the roles of the Theme Leaders.
Below is a list of some of the Theme Leaders responsibilities.

· serve on the RMC
· monitor the quality of research and report to the RMC
· provide reports to the AquaNet Administrative Centre for outside
communications
· respond to outside inquiries as requested by the AquaNet Administrative Centre
· promote AquaNet in general and their own themes specifically
· promote integration of themes
· promote theme cohesiveness and networking within their theme
· identify and encourage new research projects that advance the aquaculture
industry in ways that are environmentally and socially responsible
· provide advice in the development of new proposals
· identify and encourage research and educational activities which address
community and societal concerns with respect to the environmental and social
impact of aquaculture
· promote an awareness in government, communities and other interested
groups, of the role that AquaNet-sponsored research can play in developing
aquaculture in an environmental and socially responsible manner
· undertake other tasks at the request of the Board of Directors and Scientific
Director

Animal Production Theme

The Co-Theme Leaders of the Animal Production Theme have decided that the AP
research projects will be divided as such:

AP 2 Shellfish Health: Development of Biochemical Indicators of Stress
AP 5 Production of Disease Resistant Transgenic Salmonids Expressing Major
Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) Genes at all Temperatures
AP 10 Aquaculture Broodstock and Seed Production: Production of the Next Generation of Genetic Markers
AP 11 Production of Single-Sex (All-female) Populations of Fish for Aquaculture
AP 14 Improved Freeze and Stress Resistance with Glycerol
AP 15 Transgenic Fish with Improved Freeze Resistance by Antifreeze Gene
AP 16 Production of Transgenic Tilapia for the Treatment of Diabetes: ES-cell Approach
AP 17 Genetic and Environmental Factors Affecting Growth and Production of Mussels (Mytilus edulis and M. trossulus)
AP 19 Immunological Response in Atlantic Salmon, and the Identification of Molecular Markers Associated with an Efficient Immune System

Administrative Changes in AquaNet

Dr. Paul Hebert from the University of Guelph has submitted his resignation as a
member of the AquaNet Education Committee. Dr. Hebert was recently awarded a
Canada Research Chair in Molecular Diversity.

Ms. Melissa Struthers has been hired as the AquaNet Education Officer effective May 7, 2001. Ms. Struthers will be located at the AquaNet Administrative Centre in St. John', NF. Those attending the Aquaculture Association of Canada Meeting in Halifax on May 7-9 will be able to meet Ms. Struthers during the conference.

Applicants for the position of the AquaNet Manager of Business Development are still
being considered. We hope this position will be filled over the next few weeks.

AquaNet Booth

AquaNet will have an informational / promotional booth at the following locations:
· Aquaculture Association of Canada Conference in Halifax on May 7-9
· Humanities and Social Sciences Federation of Canada Congress in Quebec City on

May 27-30
· Atlantic Aquaculture Exposition, Conference and Fair in St. Andrews, NB on June
21-22

Take advantage of this face-to-face opportunity and mention the AquaNet booth to
current / prospective partners.

All investigators are strongly encouraged to visit the AquaNet website
(www.aquanet.mun.ca) to view the various aspects of the AquaNet programme as well as the documents found in the Members Only section.

You will require a user name and password to access the Members Only section. Your username will be your first initial and your full last name (e.g. Fred Smith = fsmith).

Your password is determined by you and then emailed to aquanet@mun.ca. The
password is case-sensitive and must be 6 - 12 characters long. Members are strongly
encouraged to use alpha-numeric passwords.
